Diamonds and other fine jewelry will last years with proper care and cleaning (and occasional inspections by a professional jeweler). There are, however, some special precautions to take when caring for your diamonds. Here are some helpful tips to keep all your diamonds and fine jewelry sparkling.

Cleaning and Care of Diamonds

  • Clean your diamond jewelry regularly at home in an ultrasonic cleaner or by hand. To make your own jewelry cleaning solution, mix one part ammonia to six parts water.

  • Gently scrub the diamond piece with a small soft toothbrush to loosen dirt and restore the diamond's brilliance. Be careful not to scratch the metal setting. Always rinse after cleaning.

  • Some chemicals can incise into gemstones and can destroy their polished surfaces. When you are about to do any work that may subject your jewelry to impacts or hazardous chemicals, remove it and store it in a safe place.

  • Even the diamond, the hardest known substance, is not absolutely resistant to external impacts. Remove your diamonds when you are going to do any work that subjects the diamond to rough handling.

  • When removing a piece of jewelry, do not pull by the stone. This might cause its setting to become loose. Gently wipe jewelry with a soft cloth to remove excess dirt and oil. Dirt and oil can accumulate on the surface of gems and diamonds, causing the brilliance of faceted stones to become dull.
  •

Maintaining Your Fine Jewelry

  • Avoid wearing diamonds or jewelry while in contact with household chemicals, such as chlorine bleach. They can discolor or damage your jewelry mountings.

  • When you're not wearing your jewelry, be careful that pieces do not tumble against each other to avoid scratching or dulling. Ideally, store each piece in its own soft cloth pouch.

  • At least once a year, have a jeweler professionally clean and inspect your diamonds. Most jewelers offer cleaning and inspection as a complimentary service to give you a lifetime of wearing pleasure.
